Why it exists

Traffic control is a business of shifts. A client rings on Thursday about a Sunday night closure. Someone works out whether there are four controllers with the right tickets and a ute with two VMS boards on it. The crew works the shift, fills in a docket book, and hands the top copy to the client representative. On Monday somebody types those hours into a spreadsheet for payroll, and somebody else types them again into an invoice a fortnight later.

Every one of those steps has software available for it. Almost none of it was written for this industry, so contractors end up running a scheduling tool that does not understand shifts, a payroll system that does not understand night loadings, and a docket book that understands nothing at all. The gaps between them are where the money goes: hours that never get billed, dockets that cannot be produced when a client queries an invoice, and licences that expire the week before a job starts.

OMBR was built to close those gaps by holding the whole job in one place — the quote, the permits, the bookings, the allocation, the shift on the crew’s phone, the signed docket, the timesheet, the pay run and the invoice.

Who it is for

Traffic control contractors: the companies that supply traffic controllers, signage, traffic management plans and road occupancy licences to road and civil projects. If you roster crews to sites, hire out plant with them, and get paid against signed dockets, the software is built around your shape of work.

That covers a two-crew operation running out of one yard just as much as a contractor with depots in several states. The plans are sized by what you run in the field, so a smaller operation is not paying for capacity it does not use.

How it is built and run

• OMBR is multi-tenant software delivered over the web. Each customer works in their own tenant, and one company’s data is not visible to another.
• It is sold per company on a monthly or annual subscription, sized by field personnel, vehicles and plant, and bookings per month. Office users are unlimited on every plan.
• Prices are set in Australian dollars and published in full on the pricing page, where they are read directly from the product so the published figures and the billed figures are the same numbers.
• There is a free plan with the full system on it, sized for a small crew, so a contractor can put real jobs through it before spending anything.

Built alongside the people using it

Our first customer is AAA Traffic Control in Sydney, and the product has been built against how they actually run: their rate cards, their night shifts, their dockets, their pay run. That is a deliberate choice. Operations software written at a distance from the operation ends up describing a business nobody runs.

It also means we would rather have a small number of contractors using OMBR properly than a large number trying it once. When you sign up you are dealing with the people who build it.
